Files

Hi @, You do not need to move anything. When you are ready to move to a new Computer, with Windows 10, I assume, just create a folder on the One Drive called Quicken Backup. Then simply go File Backup and Restore Backup a Quicken File or simply use the Keyboard Shortcut of Ctrl plus the B Key. Now simply Browse to that Folder on the One Drive. The Documents Folder already exists on One Drive, so Create a New Folder in Documents.

Move Quicken Files To New Computer

Rename that New Folder called Quicken Backup. Now click on Open, then click Save. That action loads the location in Quicken Backup. It look like this after clicking Save: C: Users Creator OneDrive Documents Quicken Backup New Install 2016-2016-08-31.QDF-backup Now simply click Back up Now. Then after the move to the New Computer, browse to the location on One Drive in Restore.

Note: If you are upgrading to say Quicken 2017 Version when you move to the New Computer, you don't need to have Quicken 2015 Version installed on the New Computer to Convert the Data. The Restore Process will Convert the Data, automatically. You need to tell Quicken where to save the Restored File, however, since it is a New Computer and Install. And you can follow this post. Thank you for your help. I did not make clear that I envision a period of time where I will need to be able to run Quicken Deluxe 2015 from either computer.

So that's why I want to be able to access it on the OneDrive. So I want to be able to have the autobackups go to the OneDrive and also, when I click on the Quicken icon in Windows 7 (old machine) and Windows 10 (new machine) have it open up the most recent, updated, Quicken file.

So, looking at your instructions, I could backup from Win7 to the OneDrive then restore to the Win10 from that location. But how do I move the main QDF file (currently in Win7's user My Documents Quicken) to the OneDrive so it can be accessed by either computer? If I just move it to a OneDriveQuicken folder and open it using File Explorer will Quicken automatically use that file in the future?

Thank you for your help. Hi @, You don't want to put your Backups on the same Drive as the Main Quicken Data File, because if your Hard Drive should fail, you have No Backup. And in the same vein, if you lost the Internet before OneDrive finished Syncing, your Data may not be up to date on both computers.

I guess then you should back up to two locations, just in case. And especially if OneDrive, ceases to be free.

main QDF files be in this shared location? Yes, as long as both copies of Quicken are the same. can I just move the QDF file to either my NAS or OneDrive folder and open it up using File Explorer? Easier to use Open Quicken First. The go File Open Quicken File, after Quicken is open. Would Quicken then use that as the location?

Yes, until you change Quicken Data File. Then I can change the location of the Backup using the FileBackup menu point. You can change the Automatic Backups in Quicken Preferences / Backup Preferences. I installed Quicken Deluxe 2015 on my new machine and when I opened it, chose the option to browse to a data file I had. I had installed Quicken to the default directory but had copied my QDF file to the OneDriveQuicken folder, which is where I browse to. So far, so good. When I go to open it, I see my name and one of my account numbers on the top of the page where it's asking for me to sign in with my Intuit ID.

It already has prefilled my email address so I just add my Quicken password (which is the only password I have). Then it says 'An unknown error has occurred. Please try to connect later.' This is the same email address and password that I sign into quicken.com with and, since it's a new computer, I have gone through the sign on process with a browser where it emails me a code to confirm my account.

I can sign in to quicken.com without problems, it's just signing into Quicken Deluxe 2015 that is the issue. I've tried rebooting but it doesn't fix it. My old computer is not using the QDF on the OneDrive yet - I've simply copied the file to that location - so I know it's not a sharing problem. At this point I'd be happy to just open it with a blank QDF and see if I can restore from a backup.

Copy Quicken From One Computer To Another

But ideally I'd like to be able to open the QDF file I have. I can see it's my file on the sign in screen. I just get stopped by the non-descript error message. Any ideas on what to do next or what the problem might be?
